AWS Budgets and Anomaly Detection with FCAI
Set budgets, alerts, and anomaly detection to prevent surprise bills with FCAI guardrails
AWS Budgets and Anomaly Detection
Proactively control spend with AWS Budgets and Cost Anomaly Detection. FCAI surfaces findings, automates setup, and sends actionable alerts to the right owners.
Create cost and usage budgets
- Define monthly budgets by account, tag, or service (Owner/Env/App tags recommended).
- Alert thresholds: 50%, 80%, 100% of budgeted amount, and forecasted-to-exceed alerts.
- Use email, SNS, or Slack via Chatbot. FCAI can route alerts to app owners.
Steps
- Open AWS Budgets → Create budget → Cost budget.
- Scope: Linked accounts, regions, tags, or services.
- Set amount (baseline last 3–6 months + growth factor).
- Add notifications at multiple thresholds and forecasted usage.
Enable Cost Anomaly Detection
- Monitors for unusual spend patterns using ML.
- Create monitors per AWS service, by linked account, or enterprise-wide.
- Route to email/SNS/Slack; FCAI enriches alerts with root-cause hints.
Steps
- Open Cost Anomaly Detection → Create monitor.
- Choose monitor type (e.g., Service, Linked account, Tag).
- Create a subscription with medium sensitivity and daily summary.
- Integrate with Slack via Chatbot if needed.
Best practices
- Combine budgets (planned) + anomaly detection (unplanned) for full coverage.
- Start strict, then tune noise down after 2–3 weeks.
- Use fine-grained monitors for expensive services (EC2, S3, CloudWatch Logs, NAT).
- Review weekly with FCAI dashboards; close or convert to tasks.
FCAI helps
- One-click setup of budgets and anomaly monitors across accounts.
- Smart routing to owners based on tags; escalation policies for production.
- Post-incident guidance and automatic creation of optimization tasks.
